Florestas e Clima: REDD
This project aims to study and disseminate the current status of the problem of illegal timber imports coming into Portugal from Mozambique, generating a debate about what the government and companies can do to prevent it. Euronatura wants to encourage companies operating in Portugal and Mozambique to stop selling timber that comes from illegal and destructive sources. The organization of the project also requires governments to eliminate the entry of illegal timber in their countries and that countries with intact forests adopt a moratorium on industrial-scale exploitation of timber from these areas.
Currently, the EU includes an action plan for implementing the law (FLEGT) but Portugal is opposed to an European proposal to sanction the illegal purchase of timber. Euronatura intends to lobby in order to change the position of the Portuguese representatives in the EU. Moreover, the recent launch of the REDD (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation) of the UN, shows that we are at the right time to develop this campaign and the project to be developed with attention to all these vessels.
