Carbon Disclosure Project
Since 2009, Euronatura cooperates in the implementation and operation of the Carbon Disclosure Project in Portugal.
The Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) is a nonprofit, independent organization, intended to develop a lasting relationship between shareholders and companies on the implications of climate change on business operations and value creation for shareholders.
Representing the collective power of the investment community (534 investors in 2010 with U.S. $ 64 trillion in assets), the CDP led more than 2,500 companies around the world to report their strategies for climate change and greenhouse emissions. This system offers the global market, investors and politicians, clear information on how companies internalize the change in its business and operations on the transition to a low carbon economy.
CDP had its first year of operations in Portugal in 2009, asking for disclosure to companies listed in the PSI-20. Although this was the first year this request was made in Portugal, in previous years a small number of Portuguese companies had already used the CDP questionnaire to report data on climate change and carbon emissions.
In 2009, 10 companies in the PSI-20 used the database of the CDP to report data related to climate change and carbon. In Portugal, the companies demonstrated a high degree of interest in the project as a channel of communication with investors. The request for disclosure of the CDP is made on behalf of institutional investors around the world: belonging to this group is Caixa Geral de Depósitos, which became a signatory investor in 2008.
In 2010, the Portuguese sample increased, now including the 40 largest companies by capitalization. These 40 companies were asked to volunteer their data on climate change and carbon emissions, responding to the 2010 CDP questionnaire. The response to the questionnaire shall be submitted by May 31st, 2010.
