ECA Ibéria

The ECA-Iberia project exists since 2002, includes NGOs in Portugal and Spain, and is coordinated by EURONATURA. This project aims to monitor the activities of iberian Export Credit Agencies (ECA), which, with public funds, support foreign investment by private companies. These investments are often located in developing countries and, by their nature, can have negative social and environmental impacts, since they often result in dams, investments in mining, oil or building of nuclear reactors.

The ECA's (COSEC in Portugal, CESCE in Spain) have an important role in this process, since a large share of exports and investments by firms from each country will only become viable through its approval. Thus, it is vital that these agencies (which we emphasize, are financed by public funds) take environmental and social guidelines, making it impossible, therefore, to export and invest in detrimental projects to the sustainable development of recipient countries.
